If you are like most people, just the thought of teaching your dog a command will either send you into a sarcastic laughing fit or into a panic attack.
Let’s face it: training dogs is not easy. However, it is for your dog’s safety and best interest that you take the time to either take your pet to obedience class or train it yourself. One of the most basic things you can do is teaching your dog to heal. When you teach your dog to heal you will be able to control him or her much better and keep him or her safe from harm without worry. Take a look at these easy instructions and try to teach your dog to heal yourself.
The first thing you should do is gather your leash to use as your restraint. Make sure you have your dog on your right side. Hold the leash with your left hand. You should let the leash hang across your backside, level with your hips.
Practice walking with the leash tight across your backside. This will make the dog a little uncomfortable if they try to stand anywhere except right by your side. Your dog will not likely catch on very quickly. Each time he or she tries to cut loose, tell them “no” firmly.
When your dog does stay at your side, be sure to tell him “heal” and “good boy”. This will allow him to know what he is doing is correct. He will also start associating the words with his actions and catch on quickly.
Remember, when you are training your dog to heal, the success won’t likely happen right away. In fact, you may need several weeks of repetitive actions to get the command through your dog’s head. So, be patient and try to realize that when your dog does “get it” your life will be a lot easier, at least when it comes to getting your dog to obey.
