Pug Dogs

Pug dogs are spunky little dogs with a short coat and wonderful face. They are stout and rugged, love to play and are excellent with children. They are not yappy and do make a good apartment dog and are outgoing and sociable with humans as well as other animals. These loyal dogs are extremely intelligent and sensitive to commands. They do require lots of attention but will reward you with their loyal companionship.

Breed Specifics

Pug dogs should be 12 to 14 inches tall for males and 10 to 12 inches for females. They should weigh between 13 to 20 pounds. They have a short sleek coat in black, fawn, apricot or silver. They are stocky with a flat face, prominent eyes and curly tails.

History

Pug dogs are an Ancient Asian breed. In the sixteenth century the were quite fashionable in European high society and a Pug is credited with saving the life of William, Prince of Orange when his barking warned them of a Spanish invasion. Many pugs were found in Chinese Imperial palace in the mid 1800’s. The AKC recognized pugs as a breed in 1885.

Medical Concerns

Pug dogs have “button” ears that fold over which creates a friendly environment for mites – therefore their ears should be inspected frequently. They are prone to colds and can suffer in extreme weather- either hot or cold. They have flat faces with protruding eyes which can cause them to have ulcers on the cornea. They are prone to breathing and skin problems.

Grooming and Care

Pug dogs are easy to groom due to their short hair. Care must be taken to insure their ears do not harbor pests and the folds of skin on their faces should be cleaned. Care should be take to make sure you dry them thoroughly after bathing as they can catch cold easily.
