Pomeranian training is essential for these lively little pets as they can become demanding unless they are shown who is boss. Pomeranians are loving and loyal companions who make great watch dogs and are one of the most intelligent of the small breeds. As with any pet, proper training is essential or you will soon find that your Pom is running the show!
Luckily Pomeranian training should be quite easy as these dogs are highly intelligent. My husband can teach our Pom a new trick in about 5 to 10 minutes, believe it or not! Of course, the first thing you’ll want them to learn is to give the proper signal when they need to go out. There are a few steps to this process which are better outlined in my article about house training a dog. If you live in an apartment or can’t always be there to bring the dog out, you might consider training your dog to use a dog litter box. Either way, remember patience and kindness is key.
One important aspect to Pomeranian training, at least for my dog, is to stop them from getting too yappy. These dogs can be great watch dogs and their bark is strong, but you need to train them to bark a couple of times when they hear someone out side and then stop. My dog will keep on yappy until I go over and pick her up or give a treat. I still haven’t figured out how to stop her from doing that! You also need to be firm with them and let them know that they can’t always get what they want just by barking – believe me they can become little tyrants if they think they can get a treat or a spot on your lap every time they bark!
Obeying your commands is very important to Pomeranian training. You want to be sure your dog will stop and return to you on command so that you can remove him from harms way should he be heading off towards something that may hurt him. My dog never goes out unattended and I like to feel quite confident that she will stop and head back towards me if I yell when I see her heading towards the road.
