Pet Cats – Their Care and Maintenance

Pet cats are a wonderful addition to your life and can even help to reduce stress. So you’ll want to make sure that you take the best possible care of your cat.

Luckily, caring for your cat is simple and inexpensive.

First off, you want to make sure your cats have all their vaccinations. If your pet is a kitten there will be a series of vaccinations that is required. If your pet is grown he will need shots once a year and some every 3 years. Your vet will be able to put him on a schedule and most vets send a note in the mail automatically when vaccinations are due so keeping up with it should be pretty easy. These vaccinations will protect our cat against feline leukemia, rabies and distemper.

In addition to these vaccinations, you want to provide proper flea control either through ointments, flea collars, or vaccinations.

You will also need to insure your pet cats are feed the proper diet. The correct nutrition can help your cat fight off disease and will keep his coat healthy and shiny. And don’t forget to provide plenty of fresh water every day.

Your pet cats can’t tell you if they are feeling sick so you will need to keep a close eye on their behavior to spot any signs of illness before they get out of hand. Take note of any changes like excessive use of the litter box, excessive thirst, listlessness or anything out of the ordinary for the cat. Call your vet right away so that you can catch any illness in time to treat it properly.

Most pet cats are very good about keeping their coats clean but you should contribute to his care by providing frequent brushing. Frequent nail inspections are recommended as your cats nails could grow around and back into the skin, especially the dew claw. This is especially important for indoor cats and cats that don’t sharpen their nails.

And don’t forget that our pet cats like to be comfortable and entertained. Make sure you provide them with plenty of toys so they don’t get bored as well as comfortable areas to sleep. A scratching post is a must to avoid having kitty sharpen his nails on your furniture. And of course, you will need to provide a litter box and make sure it is kept clean at all times.
