The Oranda goldfishis characterized by a bumpy covering over it’s face and head. Sometimes, the covering is so thick that it obscures the eyes making the fish appear as if it doesn’t even have any!
The Oranda does not have this growth when it is born, but the growth starts to appear when the fish is about 4 months and may take up to 2 years to come to it’s full appearance. This goldfish has a short round body with long veil like fins. It comes in a variety of colors including black, red, chocolate, bi color and calico.
There are a couple of varieties of the Oranda including the red cap which is an iridescent white fish with a red head, and the red Oranda whose body and head is a reddish orange color.
These goldfish belong to the carp group and can make a good aquarium or garden pond fish. These fish are hardy and can live for 20 years or more provided they receive the proper care.

Oranda are easy to care and only require proper water quality, food and space. Goldfish are best kept in a large tank (30 gallons or more) with adequate surface space. A short, long rectangular tank is best. The tank should have adequate filtration but not anything that creates too much of a current. Keep water temperature between 65 and 72 degrees F. Perform partial water changes monthly. Putting too many goldfish in a tank can have adverse affects on the fish’s health it is recommended that you have at least 7 gallons per fish.
